Direct Reports On-call Stage Crew, Stage Door Coordinator, Stage Door Attendants

Primary Function:

The Head Carpenter is responsible for overseeing the setup, maintenance, and breakdown of all scenic elements during a theatrical production of A Christmas Carol and its single city tour to New Haven, CT. This role requires a strong understanding of stage carpentry, rigging, and technical theatre, as well as the ability to lead a team of stagehands and coordinate with other departments to ensure the smooth and safe execution of the production. Production weeks are November 18, 2024, to December 9, 2024 with travel to New Haven, CT December 4 – 9, 2024. Transportation, lodging and per diem paid for days outside central Ohio, plus a weekly salary.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the stage crew in the installation, maintenance, and dismantling of scenic elements.
  • Collaborate with the production team to ensure all set pieces are operated and assembled according to the design specifications.
  • Oversee the rigging and safe operation of the production’s stage equipment.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all scenic elements and make necessary repairs.
  • Manage load-ins, load-outs, and transportation of set pieces.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with other departments (lighting, sound, etc.) to ensure seamless integration of all technical aspects.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues that arise during the production.
  • Works with user groups to prepare for upcoming events, including appropriate staffing levels, work hours, and equipment needs.
  • Reviews, approves, and submits payroll for stagehands.
  • Works with the Director of Operations and artist management to coordinate performance.
  • Maintains a safe environment for staff, users and guests, including adhering to safety rules from management and regulatory agencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs and occasionally lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to climb, sit, work on knees, as well as stand for extended periods in various environments.
  • Leadership, problem-solving, and team management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and set designs.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and best practices in theatre production.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing schedules and locations.

Credentials and Experience

  • Experience in areas of technical theatre (e.g., lighting, sound) preferred.
  • Certification in rigging or other relevant technical skills preferred.
  • Well-rounded understanding of stage carpentry, electrics, sound, and rigging, and the ability to monitor all facets of event production.
