Job Description

The Master Electrician (ME) manages lighting for The Contemporary productions. The ideal candidate
will be able to oversee the installation of the lighting plot for each show and prepare guest artists for
success. The ME collaborates with lighting designers to provide all lighting elements of each production
by using current stock, facilitating purchases and rentals, and/or borrowing lighting instruments and
materials, to ensure the timely and accurate realization of all lighting elements.

This position recruits and manages crews of skilled theatrical electricians, while managing and reporting
their budgeted hours.

The Master Electrician, with support from the Production Manager, will oversee the correspondence and
execution of lighting rentals, sales and shop resources to and from outside parties.
Additionally, the ME is responsible for ensuring the lighting shop and stock are clean, organized, and
safe places to work.
The position reports to and is supported by the Production Manager and will collaborate with the entire
Contemporary staff, as well as applicable contractors
Additional Information: This is a part-time, hourly position paying $20/hour. You can expect between
40-46 hours per show. This position works flexible hours most weeks and responds to notes around
technical rehearsals that take place evenings and weekends. This position is seasonal through June
2025.

Duties and Responsibilities
Facilitates the installation of the lighting plot for The Contemporary productions by assisting the
designers to shop for, rent, assemble, troubleshoot, and complete work notes, generated from
lighting install and technical rehearsals; and assisting in necessary adjustments.
Work with individual show designers to create a viable design vision.
In collaboration with lighting designers, manages and tracks lighting budgets.
Runs a weekly channel check during the run of a show to ensure the plot is functioning properly.
Addresses any notes that may arise during channel check or reported in Stage Manager’s
Performance Report.
Participates in recruiting and supervising electricians and lighting staff in collaboration with the
Production Manager.
Oversees overhire electricians during installation, hang and focus.
Ensure all lighting paperwork (show inventory, magic sheet, top/end of show checklist etc) is
complete.
Oversees the operation and organization of The Contemporary’s lighting shop, storage, inventory
and needs including purchases, maintenance, rentals.
Assists in the maintenance of lighting stock by organizing and restocking instruments and
equipment, cleaning and maintaining functional use of instruments and equipment, and
preparing instruments and equipment for productions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent time management skills.
Ability to solve problems creatively to keep production designers within budget and on schedule.
Strong commitment to health and safety standards.

organization.
Experience, ability, and commitment to working with individuals and teams that are mixed
across lines of difference such as race, gender-identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age,
class, and immigration status.
Must be willing and able to work flexible hours/days, including evenings and weekends,
reflective of the dynamic schedule of the theatre.
Light lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling of supplies, etc., up to 60 lbs., as well as occasional
stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
Ability to work at heights. Agility is a plus.
Credentials and Experience
2+ years experience as a working electrician.
Understanding of rigging systems.
Experience with light board programs and operation.
Experience with budgets, paperwork, and deadlines.
